Located just 15 minutes from Beechwood Inn in Clayton, Georgia, Black Rock Mountain State Park sits at over 3,446 feet in elevation, making it the highest state park in Georgia. Black Rock Lake
On your way up, halfway to the top of the mountain, opposite to the Fox Fire Museum, take a right on Taylor Chapel Road to Black Rock Lake – a peaceful and scenic spot. Because not every adventure needs to be a challenging hike. Sometimes the most memorable moments are found on a quiet walk around Black Rock Lake – just under one mile all around, the lake offers an easy, scenic path that’s perfect for slowing down and reconnecting with nature. Benches and quiet spots along the way invite you to pause, take in the fresh mountain air.
If only for the view, the calm water mirrors the surrounding forest, creating postcard-worthy reflections that change with every season. In spring and summer, lush greenery frames the shoreline, while autumn transforms the landscape into a brilliant display of reds, oranges, and golds. Perfect to sit and enjoy.

Tennessee Rock Trail
For a moderate and rewarding hike with a bit of a challenging elevation, one of the park’s most popular hikes is the Tennessee Rock Trail.
Standing atop the rocky outcrop, you’ll understand why Black Rock Mountain has become a favorite destination for photographers and nature lovers alike for its spectacular and panoramic views. Its stretches through 2.2 miles and usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours to complete.
James E. Edmonds Backcountry Trail
For the experienced hikers and enthusiasts of a true mountain adventure, the James E. Edmonds Backcountry Trail is one of the most challenging hikes in Northeast Georgia. Named after one of Black Rock Mountain State Park’s first rangers, this rugged 7.2-mile loop takes hikers deep into the park’s quiet backcountry, where nature remains largely untouched. One of the highlights is the climb to Lookoff Mountain, where hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.
The Drive to the Top
One of the best experiences at Black Rock Mountain State Park doesn’t require hiking boots at all. From Beechwood Inn, a scenic drive, climbing steadily along a picturesque mountain road to the overlook, reaching an elevation of 3,446 feet.
You’ll notice the air becomes noticeably cooler and the scenery transforms with every turn. Towering hardwoods and evergreens line the roadway, while glimpses of distant mountain ridges begin to appear through the trees. The drive itself is part of the adventure, with each curve revealing another breathtaking view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
At the summit, you’ll arrive at the Black Rock Mountain Visitor Center, where expansive roadside overlooks make it easy for everyone to experience some of the most spectacular scenery in North Georgia.
