Fall Leaf Season in Clayton: A Guide to North Georgia’s Mountain Season

Black Rock Mountain State Park: Start at the Top
For a spectacular introduction to fall in Rabun County, head up to Black Rock Mountain State Park.
At an elevation of 3,640 feet, Black Rock is Georgia’s highest state park, and its elevation means it is often among the first places in the area to show vibrant autumn color. Roadside overlooks and the summit Visitor Center offer sweeping Blue Ridge Mountain views, with vistas extending as far as 80 miles on clear days.
For an easy leaf-peeping outing, simply make the drive up and stop at the overlooks. If you’d rather earn the view, take the 2.2-mile Tennessee Rock Trail. The loop winds through high-elevation forest before opening to long-range mountain vistas.
Don’t miss: Cowee Overlook and the scenic overlook near the Visitor Center.

Tallulah Gorge: Fall Color with a Dramatic View
A fall visit to Tallulah Gorge State Park offers an entirely different perspective.
Here, the Tallulah River cuts through a gorge nearly 1,000 feet deep, creating a dramatic backdrop for autumn foliage. The North and South Rim Trails provide a series of overlooks looking across and down into the gorge, with views of waterfalls, rock formations and forest-covered walls.
You don’t have to tackle the most strenuous trails to enjoy the scenery. The rim trails total about three miles round-trip and connect multiple scenic overlooks.
For those wanting more adventure, the suspension bridge hangs 80 feet above the rocky bottom of the gorge.
Don’t miss: The overlooks along both rims—the changing elevation and angles make the foliage look different around almost every bend.

Take a Fall Drive Around Lake Rabun
Not every great fall view requires hiking boots. A drive around Lake Rabun is one of our favorite ways to experience autumn at a slower pace. The beauty here is in the combination: winding roads, wooded hillsides, quiet coves and autumn colors reflected across the lake.
Leave yourself time to wander rather than rush. Pull over where appropriate, take in the view, and allow the road itself to become part of your fall experience.
This is particularly lovely for a relaxed afternoon away from the busier leaf-peeping destinations.

Warwoman Road: Take the Scenic Way
Sometimes the best fall views aren’t found at a designated overlook.
From Clayton, follow Warwoman Road east and watch downtown quickly give way to forest, mountain streams and the quieter side of Rabun County.
This is the kind of road that reminds you why autumn road trips are so special.
Make a stop at Warwoman Dell, stretch your legs with a short walk, and enjoy the forest at ground level. Continue farther into the countryside and you’ll find yourself surrounded by the changing landscape of the Southern Appalachians.
It’s less about reaching one famous viewpoint and more about watching fall unfold mile by mile.

Chase a Waterfall Surrounded by Fall Color
Fall foliage gets even better when there’s a waterfall to chase. Combine leaf peeping with a visit to many of our surrounding waterfall as Minnehaha Falls, Hemlock Falls, Becky Branch Falls, Angel Falls and Panther Falls. Rather than looking across miles of color from a mountaintop, these hikes place you inside the autumn forest.
The experience is different: leaves crunching beneath your feet, cool mountain air, sunlight filtering through shades of yellow and orange, and the sound of falling water somewhere ahead.

Last but not Least – Don’t Overlook Downtown Clayton
Fall isn’t only about the big vistas.
