Cozy Season in the Mountains
There’s that moment every year when the North Georgia Mountains begin to feel a little different. The mornings arrive cooler. The light turns softer and golden. Leaves begin changing along winding mountain roads, fireplaces come back to life, and suddenly sitting on the porch with a warm cup of coffee feels exactly where you’re supposed to be.
It is Cozy Season in the Mountains. And at Beechwood Inn in Clayton, Georgia, fall isn’t simply something to come see. It’s an experience to savor the moments in between.
Slow Mornings Are Better in the Mountains
Fall mornings were made for taking your time. Wake beneath cozy bedding, throw on something warm, and wander downstairs for freshly brewed coffee before settling in for our homemade breakfast.
There’s nowhere you need to rush off to.
Maybe you’ll spend the morning on the front porch watching the mountains wake up. Maybe you’ll map out a waterfall hike or a drive through the changing leaves. Or maybe breakfast turns into another cup of coffee and a little more conversation. That’s a perfectly good way to start the day.
Take the Long Way
One of our favorite things about the fall season in North Georgia is that getting somewhere can be just as beautiful as the destination.
Start at Beechwood Inn and follow winding roads through the mountains, where every turn seems to reveal another view. Head toward Black Rock Mountain State Park for the highest peak. Chase a waterfall or two at the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. Wander along side Lake Rabun and watch the sunlight dance across the water. Or stop by the local roadside farm stand for the season’s produce and something sweet to take home.
This is the season for taking the long way. No complicated itinerary required.
A Little Wine, A Little Fall Color
Fall and the Georgia Wine Country make a particularly good pair.
Spend an afternoon exploring one of the local vineyards tucked throughout the mountains. Find a spot overlooking the vines, savor a wine tasting flight, and linger while the hills begin showing off their autumn colors.
Then make your way back to Beechwood Inn for one of our favorite traditions – Wine30. At 5:30, we pour the wine, put out a few bites, and gather with our guests. Some evenings are spent swapping stories on the porch or gathered around the living room’s fireplace. Here, is where conversations between strangers turn into friendships before the evening is over.
Come Home to Cozy
After a day exploring the mountains, take comfort in settling back to the warmth of the 100-year-old farmhouse – where it feels like home.
Settle into a chair beside a fireplace. Find a quiet corner with a book. Put a record on. Pour another glass of wine. Simply relax and unplug for a while.
Our guestrooms and gathering spaces were made for these slower moments – comfortable, relaxed and filled with the character of a house that has welcomed people for more than a century.
Outside, when the evening gets cooler. Inside, the fireplace is glowing.
This is the part of fall you can’t capture in a photograph. You simply must be here to embrace it all.
Wander Into Clayton
One of the best things about staying at Beechwood Inn is having the quiet of the mountains while being just minutes from downtown Clayton.
Spend an afternoon wandering Main Street, where locally owned mom-and-pop shops, boutiques, cafés and specialty stores give this little mountain town its personality. Browse shelves filled with local finds, art and unique gifts. Strike up a conversation with a shop owner, stop for a freshly brewed coffee, or give in to something sweet along the way.
What makes Clayton special isn’t simply what you’ll find in the shops – it’s the people and the easygoing mountain-town vibe. There’s an evident friendliness in the people you meet. No big-city rush. No need for an itinerary. Just kindness, small businesses and a Main Street – that still looks and feels like a Main Street.
When evening rolls around, head into one of Clayton’s various restaurants for dinner and a cocktail or glass of wine.
When evening rolls around, head into one of Clayton’s restaurants, where the food scene is every bit as inviting as the town itself. From creative Southern-inspired dishes and seasonal ingredients to casual favorites and globally inspired flavors, there’s plenty to discover. Try a seasonal handcrafted cocktail and let dinner unfold at an easy mountain-town pace.
Make Room for Nothing
Perhaps the best thing about a fall mountain getaway is what you don’t have to do.
You don’t have to check everything off a list. You don’t need to fill every hour.
Leave some room for the day to unfold. For a nap after breakfast. A quiet moment within nature. An unexpected stop along a country road. A conversation that lasts longer than planned.
Maybe the greatest gift from the mountains is simply remembering what it feels like to slow down.
Fall With Us
Fall may bring people to the North Georgia Mountains for the changing leaves, but we think the best parts of the season are found in the moments in between.
Cool mornings. Homemade breakfast. Winding roads. Local wine. Cozy fireplaces. Porch conversations. And a beautiful old farmhouse waiting for you to settle in and stay awhile.
Because Beechwood Inn isn’t meant to simply be a place you visit. It’s meant to be felt. In the warmth of a morning coffee. In conversations that linger longer than expected. In the quiet of the mountains. In those unplanned moments when you realize there’s nowhere else you need to be.
