Fall in the North Georgia Mountains: A Cozy Getaway to Clayton, Georgia
There is a moment every year when the North Georgia Mountains begin to change. Mornings arrive a little cooler. The light turns softer. The first hints of gold appear among the green, and before long, the mountains surrounding Clayton are layered in shades of amber, crimson, orange, and gold.
Fall has arrived in North Georgia.
One of the most magical times of year to simply get away.
Secluded among mountains just minutes from downtown Clayton, Beechwood Inn makes a perfect spot for a North Georgia Fall Getaway – filled with scenic drives, colorful hikes, waterfalls, vineyards, small-town discoveries – and plenty of time to slow down and enjoy the season.
Start With a Slow Fall Morning at Beechwood
There is no need to rush into your day. Fall mornings at Beechwood Inn are best enjoyed slowly. Pour yourself a cup of freshly brewed coffee, step onto the porch, and take in the crisp mountain air while the morning light moves across Black Rock Mountain.
Then linger over a homemade breakfast before deciding where the day will take you. Maybe it’s a hike. Maybe it’s a vineyard. Maybe it’s simply another cup of coffee.
That’s the beauty of a mountain getaway – your itinerary can be as full or as wonderfully empty as you want it to be.
Follow the Fall Colors to Black Rock Mountain
Just a short drive from Beechwood Inn, Black Rock Mountain State Park is one of our favorite places to experience fall in the North Georgia Mountains.
Even the drive toward the summit becomes part of the adventure as the road winds higher through the changing forest.
At 3,600 feet in elevation, scenic overlooks reveal layer after layer of Blue Ridge Mountain ridgelines stretching into the distance. During peak fall color, the landscape below becomes a patchwork of brilliant autumn shades.
For those who want to hike, choose from shorter scenic trails or spend more time exploring the mountain.

Prefer something peaceful? Head toward Black Rock Lake for a leisurely walk around the water. The reflections of autumn trees across the lake can be especially beautiful on a calm fall morning. Pack a picnic, find a favorite view, and stay awhile.

Chase a Waterfall Through the Fall Forest
Waterfalls are beautiful year-round, but there’s something particularly magical about finding one surrounded by autumn color.
Clayton sits in the heart of waterfall country, with numerous cascades and forest trails within an easy drive of Beechwood Inn.
Visit Minnehaha Falls for one of the area’s most picturesque cascades, hike through the woods toward Panther Falls and Angel Falls, or make your way to Tallulah Gorge State Park for dramatic overlooks and one of Georgia’s most remarkable natural landscapes.
The journey is often just as memorable as the destination.
Fallen leaves beneath your boots. Cool air through the trees. The distant sound of rushing water becoming louder as you approach.
This is what the magic of FALL in the mountains feels like.
Take the Scenic Road
Fall is the season for scenic drives – and in North Georgia, sometimes the best plan is simply to take the long way.
Leave Clayton and follow winding mountain roads past farms, forests, lakes, vineyards, and tiny communities tucked into the hills.
One of the best things about Clayton? You’re perfectly positioned for a road trip in almost any direction. Within 20 minutes to an hour, winding mountain roads lead north, east, and west through brilliant fall color, small mountain communities, scenic overlooks, and unexpected roadside finds.
Slow down when something catches your eye. Find an overlook. Pull over for pictures. Stop along the way for local produce, fresh-baked breads, homemade jams, farm stands, and little country stores you might otherwise drive right past.
No itinerary needed. Pick a road, follow the colors, and see where the mountains take you.
Sometimes the best fall memories are found along the way.
Sip Your Way Through North Georgia Wine Country
Fall and wine country were made for each other.
The vineyards surrounding Clayton are beautiful this time of year, when cool afternoons, colorful hillsides, and rows of vines create an irresistible reason to linger outdoors.
Spend an afternoon discovering some of North Georgia’s wineries and vineyards, including favorites such as Stonewall Creek Vineyards, Tiger Mountain Vineyards, and Crane Creek Vineyards.
Choose a tasting, find a seat overlooking the vines, and enjoy the view with a glass of local wine.
Our advice? Don’t try to visit every vineyard in one afternoon. Pick one or two and give yourself permission to stay longer than planned.
That’s what mountain time is all about.

Fall for Downtown Clayton
After exploring the mountains, save time for downtown Clayton.
Just two minutes from Beechwood Inn, Main Street is filled with the kind of unique shops, restaurants, galleries, and gathering places that make a small mountain town quaint and so enjoyable to explore.
Discover something special, support small businesses and shop local. Stop for coffee or something sweet. Find a fun spot for cocktails before dinner.
Then settle into one of Clayton’s locally owned restaurants for an unhurried evening.
The town is small enough to feel intimate yet full of unexpected finds – and during fall, surrounded by colorful mountains and cooler air, it feels particularly inviting.

After a day out and about, there’s something wonderful about returning to the inn.
